The Dying Giant

Project Overview

Wanting to do another VR Unity project, I worked on The Dying Giant to create exposure to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and it's negative effects on the ocean and it's inhabitants.

Contribution

I was the main developer for this project. I curated free assets from online but also created my own in the form of music and sound design.

Research

Not having too much experience with unity proved to be a major hurdle that I would have to overcome to create this project. Comparing my Sensory room project with this one is like comparing a small motorbike engine with a big airplane engine. I wanted to increase the complexity of this project to be able to incorporate the features in other Unity VR projects. This meant that a large amount of my time was dedicated to researching methods on how to do things with in Unity as well as implementing them and testing.

Main Design Elements

VR Functionality

Users are able to look around the seemingly pristine ocean reef view before them and admire the different animals that inhabit them.

Low Poly Art Style

While creating my own assets would have been more desirable, I curated low poly assets of fish, the reef and garbage to be able to complement one another and to have visual cohesion within the project.

Experience Driven Experience

This experience is meant to allow users to walk around the reef and take in it's beauty. However, the main event of the experience is set within a timeline that will infinitely loop to show the impacts of our pollution in the ocean. It loops so even if the user doesn't see it the first time, they would be able to see it later after exploring.
